Dairy-Free Calcium-Rich Foods

Posted .

We’ve all heard that calcium is important for teeth. In fact, it is recommended that we eat 1,000-2,000 mg daily! Calcium helps sustain tooth enamel, the hard outer layer that protects the soft root of the tooth. To get the recommended daily dose of calcium, many people turn to dairy products such as cheese, milk, or yogurt. But what if you need to limit or eliminate dairy from your diet?

Luckily, there are a number of other delicious food sources to get your daily dose of calcium. Here are a few examples.

Almonds: Almonds are a tasty way to incorporate calcium into your diet. Not only do they contain 246 mg of calcium per cup, but they also contain other vitamins and minerals such as magnesium and vitamin E. Almonds also contain fiber, protein, and healthy fats. All in all, almonds are a fabulous snacking choice.

Beans: Beans are a fantastic way to add calcium to your diet. And, there is a wide variety to choose from. Soybeans, for example, pack 515 mg of calcium into just one cup! White beans contain 485 mg per cup, and kidney beans have 359 mg per cup. Beans are also full of fiber, vitamins and minerals, and protein, which are good for sustaining overall health–as well as a healthy smile.

Fortified Foods: Foods such as tofu, orange juice, and even some breakfast cereals come fortified with extra calcium. This is a great way to enjoy a variety of foods while still giving your body the calcium it needs to support healthy teeth!
