Did you know, sleep apnea can be hazardous to your overall health? Well, it’s true! Sleep apnea is a serious condition that most people often dismiss because they think it is only snoring. However, snoring is a warning sign something is wrong and to seek help. To teach you about sleep apnea, our dentist, Dr. Scott Ellard with Scott Ellard Dentistry in Portage, Michigan, is here to assist you.

Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that falls into effect while you are sleeping, and your breathing becomes very difficult or interrupted as you sleep causing you to snore. The sleeping disorder can happen to anyone, no matter their age, including children. However, more adults are prone to sleep apnea then children. Adults over forty or who are overweight are frequently the most likely to develop this condition. Sleep apnea can also occur in those with a long history of sleep apnea or people with very large tonsils, tiny jaws, or large tongues. If you suffer from nasal obstructions such as a deviated septum, for example, allergies, or any sinus problems, you can also be at risk for sleep apnea.

When sleep apnea is left untreated, it can lead to a host of problems that could have been avoided. These health problems include:

-heart failure or heart attacks

-high blood pressure

-worsening of ADHD

These health problems can lead to painful or deadly results in many cases, which is why treating your sleep apnea is important.
