Dr. Scott Ellard and our dental team would like to shed some light on common dental myths to promote dental hygiene as well as dental awareness. Unfortunately, people believe what they see on the Internet, and it can lead to many dental issues.
Myth No. 1: It’s normal to have bleeding gums.
It’s not normal to have bleeding gums. In fact, your gums aren’t meant to bleed. If they do bleed, it’s usually a sign of a more serious dental issue, like gum disease. So, if you notice a little pink in the sink, it’s important to visit your dentist and keep up on oral hygiene, even flossing once a day!
Myth No. 2: String floss is the only tool you can use to clean between your teeth.
String floss, as well as many other flossing tools, are great for removing plaque and other substances from between the teeth. So, please feel free to use other flossing tools, like flossing sticks and water flossers, to deeply clean your smile.
Myth No. 3: Your teeth are healthy if they don’t hurt.
Unfortunately, there are some dental issues that attack the teeth and gums without causing pain. This is one of the main reasons why your dental checkups are very important. So, even though your teeth aren’t aching, it’s still important to care for and clean them by keeping up on oral hygiene and visiting your dentist regularly.
